As the Ganesh Utasav approaches, the excitement and enthusiasm to celebrate the festival of Ganesha’s birthday is palpable. The traditional Hindu festival is a time for family, friends, and community to come together and seek the blessings of the beloved elephant-headed deity. And what better way to do so than with a delicious spread of traditional Indian desserts, particularly kheer? In this blog, we will explore five mouth-watering varieties of kheer that you can make to appease Bappa (Ganesha) and delight your taste buds.

Variety 1: Traditional Rice Kheer

The classic rice kheer is a staple dessert in Indian cuisine and a must-have during Ganesh Utasav. This simple yet flavorful dessert is made with cooked rice, milk, sugar, and cardamom. The creamy texture and sweet flavor of the kheer make it an ideal offering to Bappa.

Recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup cooked rice
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom
  • 1 tablespoon ghee
  • Chopped nuts (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Cook the rice until it’s soft and mushy.
  2. Boil the milk with sugar and cardamom until the sugar dissolves.
  3. Add the cooked rice to the milk mixture and stir well.
  4. Add ghee and chopped nuts (if using) and mix well.
  5. Serve warm or chilled.

Variety 2: Vermicelli Kheer

Vermicelli kheer, also known as seviyan kheer, is another popular variation of kheer made with vermicelli noodles instead of rice. The vermicelli noodles add a unique texture and flavor to the dish.

Recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup vermicelli noodles
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom
  • 1 tablespoon ghee
  • Chopped nuts (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Cook the vermicelli noodles according to package instructions.
  2. Boil the milk with sugar and cardamom until the sugar dissolves.
  3. Add the cooked vermicelli noodles to the milk mixture and stir well.
  4. Add ghee and chopped nuts (if using) and mix well.
  5. Serve warm or chilled.

Variety 3: Sabudana Kheer

Sabudana kheer is a popular dessert in North India, particularly during fasting days like Navratri. The sago pearls add a unique texture and flavor to the dish.

Recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup sago pearls
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom
  • 1 tablespoon ghee
  • Chopped nuts (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Rinse the sago pearls and soak them in water for at least 4 hours.
  2. Boil the milk with sugar and cardamom until the sugar dissolves.
  3. Add the soaked sago pearls to the milk mixture and stir well.
  4. Add ghee and chopped nuts (if using) and mix well.
  5. Serve warm or chilled.

Variety 4: Paneer Kheer

Paneer kheer is a rich and creamy dessert made with paneer (Indian cheese), milk, and sugar. The paneer adds a unique texture and flavor to the dish.

Recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 250 gm paneer cubes
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom
  • 1 tablespoon ghee
  • Chopped nuts (optional)
